This is a guide to help people have a running game without using Gold Legends like Earl Campbell.
GAPS
The first thing to understand before you can have a running game is to learn what a GAPS is.
A Gaps is the open spaces between players on the line of scrimmage.
For example, the gap between the center and guard is called the "A" gap.
These spaces are the areas where your RB can run into and your Offensive Linemen are responsible for opening up Gaps.
If the Defense are able to clog up the Gaps, then there is no running game, since there are no holes to run into.
DEFENSE
The next step is to learn about your opponents defense.
There are three things to remember when in the LOS.
1. Defensive Formation 2. Zone Defense 3. Man to Man Defense
Defensive Formation
The first thing to keep an eye on is your opponents defensive formation. Is your opponent running a 4-3? a 4-6/Bear? a Dime? a 4-4?
A defense with 8 people on the LOS has a much greater chance of stopping the run than a defense with only 7 at the LOS. This is because of the GAPS. The running game revolves around GAPS.
Zone Defense and Man to Man
A zone defense has a higher rate of stopping the run. While man to man defenses have a difficulty of stopping the run. This is because in Man to Man, the defense is focused on players, and they are easily blocked. While a zone is only focused on certain areas of the field which makes them harder to engage and block.
OFFENSE
Once you learn about the Defense and how they are playing, then the offense comes into play.
There are two things to remember when you are on offense.
1. Offensive Package 2. Audibles
Offensive Package
To run the ball you need to have blockers, the more blockers the better.
Formations such as ACE, I form, Pro Set, I Joker, are generally good against defensive packages such as 4-3, Bear, Goalline defenses. This is because they have a lot of blockers that opens up the GAPS.
Running with a Passing Formation
Formations such as the Shotgun or any formations that has a 4 WR 1RB set generally do not do well against 4-3 or Bear defenses unless it is a Bunch formation. A Bunch formation is sometimes effecitive because it has a lot of blockers. A regular 4WR 1RB formation are only effective when they are matched up against a Dime or a Prevent.
Audibles
When your opponent is able to adjust against your formation, then you have to use your audible.
For example.
If an opponent adjust his LBs to clog up the right side, your running game will have less chance of being effective because he is clogging up the Gaps. But you can audible and call a weakside counter, or just flip the play to run to the area with less blockers.
Just remember, the more defensive personnel (LBs) the area you are running to, the more chances your running game will be stopped. So always run in the area with less defensive personnel, this makes it easier for your OLine to block as well as easier for your RB to break free.
That's it!
Running Game is all about countering the GAPS!

Another note I want to add is to not be afraid to take cut-back lanes. Some RB's actually receive a slight "boost" in their speed when they change lanes and hit a different hole/gap. Players like Emmitt Smith, Natrone Means, Barry Sanders, etc will actually receive a pretty significant quick speed boast for a quick second.
Also, when running sweeps or tosses, follow the lead blockers. Many players start out each play by sprinting (tapping the "A" button) and will generally out-run or collide with their lead blockers, but this is the time to be patient. Run along but do not run past your players. This is the best opportunity to charge up your first move so that after your blocker makes contact with a defender, it will most likely leave you one on one with the next defender who you'll have to manually break his tackle. |
